A Beginning to an End

Where the Sidewalk Ends:
Shel Silverstein

There is a place where the sidewalk ends
and before the street begins,
and there the grass grows soft and white,
and there the sun burns crimson bright,
and there the moon-bird rests from his flight
to cool in the peppermint wind.

Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black
and the dark street winds and bends.
Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow
we shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow
and watch where the chalk-white arrows go
to the place where the sidewalk ends.

Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
and we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go,
for the children, they mark, and the children, they know,
the place where the sidewalk ends.

Response: A Beginning to an End

This is where is all begins
it's the place where the sidewalk ends.
Where dreams arise and find the light,
where the sun comes up from the night,
and were all amazed by our new sight
of the world and yet to come.

We are all to take the leap into the new world,
and to find our blossoming niches.
This can be somewhat bizarre,
similar to driving a brand new car,
but amongst the stars we find who we are
past where the sidewalk ends.

Sure, it may take a push, and a shove,
but wonder is what we find plenty of,
our family emitting tons of love,
this is where it all begins.

  1. Your response adds a new twist to the original poem. You worked the rhymes in nicely (I'm always bad at that part). I like the image of dreams rising. Also the line, amongst the stars we find who we are. That has a nice sound to it: stARS and ARE. Great job.
