As I continued to read, there were numerous occasions where listening played the role of different senses and feelings, which I believed to be very powerful and added depth to his story. For example, when the Narrator is talking about how his wife knew something was wrong with their daughter when she heard the daughter fall but heard no tears. Fear was immediately was invoked in her and she rushed to her child to find that she was in desperate need of help. At the very end when Sonny invites the Narrator to come and finally listen to him play his music, the Narrator sees his parents as well as his little girl who had died.
Even though the Sonny and the Narrator were constantly butting heads, its when the Narrator listened to his brothers music that he was able to see who he really was and understand his suffering as well as accept his own.
I think you have made some really great points. I didn't even pick up on that theme, though it seems obvious now. I bet a person writing a paper on that theme could even do a lot more than you've already mentioned. It could be brought to a metaphorical level and have something to do with the two races listening to each other better to understand each other better. Maybe. I like your blog. Thank you for helping me see the story in another way.
ReplyDeleteThat line Sonny says about his brother never hearing him stood out to me too. I like the parallel between that and the narrator never listening to Sonny play the piano ever. Only when he goes into Sonny's world does he listen o Sonny and finally understand.
ReplyDeleteI think the other comments mention this, but Sonny saying his brother never listens to him was really powerful. I wish I could have stopped the story and told the narrator to take time for Sonny, especially after hearing the account of his uncle's fate. It mirrored Sonny in so many ways. When the focalizer finally does hear the music, I felt like Sonny was spared somehow from the same fate.
